The USS South Dakota (BB-57) Battleship should not be overlooked by model enthusiasts. This U.S. Navy Battleship was first commissioned in March of 1942, almost four years after it was first ordered. This ship was believed to have carried the youngest serviceman to have fought in WWII – Calvin Graham. After participating in three battles, Calvin divulged his true age and was not only sent to the brig for three months, his veteran benefits were also revoked. Shortly after his dishonorable discharge, he celebrated his 13th birthday and returned to school to complete 7th grade.
During World War II, the USS South Dakota would serve two tours in the Pacific Theater in addition to one tour in between with the British Home Fleet. After the war, the ship received an overhaul in Philadelphia and once completed, she was attached to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. The ship remained with the fleet until June 1, 1962 when she would be removed from the naval registry and eventually sold for scrap.
